Redirects, Google Accounts and Feedburner

I know I am usually a Google Fan Boy but I am afraid this one has really pissed me off and I just have to vent.

But, before I do that, we have moved our feed service from Feedburner (why will become clear below) and if you are subscribed to this blog via email I am really sorry but you are going to have to resubscribe here and if you view this blog via RSS you will need to resubscribe here.

So why am I risking losing followers by moving from Feedburner and why has Google really let me down? They’re related, trust me.

Most of us have several Google Apps and Google accounts (what’s the difference?). And in some cases many of us had linked our Google App account to a Google Account so that we could use it for Feedburner, our Source Code Projects, etc. All of this worked just fine and then all of sudden we started having issues with one Google App or Google account clobbering another’s session, so we started running each account in it’s own browser. Yes, what a pain in the ass. And then all of a sudden two weeks ago this stopped working. After allot of playing around we realized that Google App and Google linked accounts had now started wiping each other’s sessions out. Not having any choice we started unlinking these accounts and low and behold I lost all access to Feedburner, Analytics and my Project sites. Because I had used a linked account to get into them. Crap! I recreated the link and still no luck. Each service set me up as a brand new user.

I then went to the Google forums and posted, and waited, and waited, and read about more and more people who were steaming mad, and waited for at least Feedburner to respond and relink my account. NOTHING. Google, is this really how you should spend your money acquiring companies like Feedburner only to abandon all support of them and drive your users away? Your call, but me, I’m cheap, and if I spent what I believe was $100M (I might be wrong) on Feedburner I sure as hell would want to get a return on it rather than make it a black eye that causes people like me to write posts like this. But hey, your $100M, so have fun with that.

So… we jumped. We are no longer using Feedburner and we have moved our RSS and Email service to Feedblitz. So far I like them. They actually respond, and even quickly, to support requests.

And, if you have multiple Google accounts, both App and the regular Google Account. From what we can tell, run them in separate browsers or in an incognito window so that they don’t mess each others authentication up, and if you have linked a Google App account to a Google Account – DON”T DO IT. Unlink them. But don’t be a bonehead like myself, first go to all of the services that you use that account on and change the account that you login with.

And Google, could you please come clean on this multi account account authentication craziness and at least acknowledge it is broken and give us your thoughts, some direction, anything?

Did I mention that you need to resubscribe to this blog? ;-) Email is here and RSS is here. I think our distribution on Feedburner has defaulted to a deleted account which means we only have about 20 days left before it stops working.

Thanks for listening!
